Cognitive Psychology is a psychology subspecialty that advances the scientific investigation of human cognition and internal mental processes. In other words, it is the study of memory, language processing, perception, problem solving, and thinking. The objective of this subspecialty is to see how the mind practically functions to achieve understanding.

If interested in a career path that specializes in the cognitive growth and functionality of human beings, one must prepare with classes on theory, analysis, and practical research. This profession can make a significant difference in the lives of others--from preparing students to use critical thinking skills in preparation for life after school to helping organizations achieve more efficient use of their employees' talents. As with most careers in psychology, continuing postgraduate education is required.

A cognitive psychologist believes in helping subjects make connections across all realms of the brain to achieve the deepest understanding and competence possible through the human intellect. This type of professional is highly valued in educational, public, and private sectors.

Cognitive Psychology Professional Methods

Cognitive psychologists conduct research and experiments to form a more definitive understanding for how subjects use memory, perception, categorization, numerals, language, thinking, and representation of knowledge to process new information. In other words, how does prior experience help one to function within the new developments of life?

Perception deals with matters, such as how a subject is able to filter out certain events and happenstances to focus on one thing in particular. Categorization is another point of analysis that singles out how the human mind is able to associate items in groups based on similarities or differences.

The field of memory may see a cognitive psychologist observing the way that memory is held or lost through the process of aging. Whatever the field of study within this subspecialty, a cognitive psychologist generally uses observation, surveys and social experimentation, to develop or affirm theories.

Careers in Cognitive Psychology

Cognitive psychologists may be used in the educational setting as guidance counselors. They may also be eligible for secondary/post-secondary teaching or school administration with further certification likely. At the corporate level, they may be used in marketing and human resource departments to help in hiring, employee culture, and brand development.

Generally, the salary expectations for cognitive psychologists depend on which sector employs them. Educators earn less except those working in school administration. Public and private sector professionals command higher salaries as do those in private consulting firms. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported as of 2010 these professionals earned a mean annual wage of around $90,000.

Cognitive Psychology Education and Training

As with the field of social psychology and many other subspecialties, cognitive psychologists cannot find gainful employment in their field with anything less than a master's. As the field grows more competitive, doctorate degrees in a related psychology field are necessary. One should check their state licensing requirements before moving forward.
