Neurobiology is a psychology subspecialty that specifically addresses the biology of the central nervous system. Molecular, cellular, systems-level, and computational techniques are used to explore the functions of the brain. It is an interdisciplinary filed, drawing on research from the fields of developmental psychology, developmental neurobiology, and behavioral psychology.

This area of psychology is about more than feelings and mental health. It is also about how one very specific system of the body corresponds to human behaviors and practices. Professionals in this area emphasize science as much as they do emotion, and in so doing, they are able to help direct caregivers better understand their subjects.

Neurobiology Methods of Operation

Theory is important to the neurobiology professional in diagnosing, assessing and treating subjects. While these professionals are not as directly involved in caregiving as, say, a counselor or social worker, their research and applications are certainly useful to the field as a whole. The profession is a marriage of science and observation in helping to determine a path that is best for the patient.

Neurobiology professionals more often than not work in research at universities, drug companies, and medical leaning environments. They are not the standard hands-on counselor, but their work usually finds its way into a psychiatrist's office or hospital.

Careers in Neurobiology

The most common career paths for the neurobiology degree are teaching and research. Neurobiologists may even do both. The field is always in demand for those with a doctorate degree, who have received state licensing. Consultancies are also popular in this field of practice.

Given the rigorous nature of the training and development, neurobiologists earn quite well once they are established. They will certainly earn more than a standard child or adult counselor over the course of a lifetime with $80,000 annually being the average income, and many doing far better than that.

Neurobiology Education and Training

The neurobiology degree is not as common as most other forms of psychology, but there are opportunities in every state to earn a Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Education, or Doctor of Psychology, in the field. Of course, the degree is only the beginning of the neurobiologist's training. Most states require passage of a licensing exam before they will permit one to work in the field.

Internships or supervised work studies are also usually essential to the aspiring neurobiologist. The degree path itself can take as much as 10 years to complete, making it not unlike advanced medicine for rigorous training and expectations.
